John Goodman of Goochland County VAIn the Douglas Register is recorded the marriage on 26 Mar 1781 of John Goodman, ca. 1751, and Jeannie (Jane) Lawrie (Lowry) b. ca. 1761, in Goochland County VA. They had at least one son, George, baptized in 1784, also in the Douglas Register, and possibly another, Benjamin Talbert "Bird" Goodman, b. 1802 on Barren Co., KY, who was a well known statesman, senator, and Christian minister, and who d. Apr 1874 in Dubois Co., IN. Possibly another son, inference by name and location: John Lowry Goodman, b. 1796 in KY, who married Amelia Hulen 1823/4 in Davies Co., IN. John and Jane also had at least one daughter, Mary "Polly" Goodman, b. 1795 in KY, who married Uriah Hart in 1811 in Barren Co., KY. Uriah was born 1792. Oliver Hart, born 1772, was Uriah’s father, and Aaron Hart, born about 1752, was Oliver’s father. Aaron Hart was probably the son of Nathaniel Hart, or one of his brothers, Thomas or David Hart. A Thomas Heart/Hart was also listed in the records, perhaps providing bond for, or as a witness to the wedding of Uriah Hart and Mary "Polly" Goodman. The George Goodman who married Betsy Flippin 19 Mar 1803 in Barren Co., Ky. and the Jesse Goodman, who married Rhoda Flippin in Barren Co., KY on 20 Apr 1815, may have been sons of John and Jane Goodman of Goochland. According to family tradition, this family were members of the Church of England in VA, and Baptists in KY. ("The Douglas Register" and E-Mails from Lonnie Fink, descendant of John Goodman and Jane Lowry). Jesse Goodman and Solomon Goodman were privates in Capt. Hugh Brown’s Co., First Regiment Kentucky Mounted Militia in the War of 1812. Sgt. Thomas Flippin, William Flippin, and Pvt. James Flippin and John Flippin were also members of that Co. We are seeking more information and documentary evidence on this family. Even though it is still not 100% accurate, probably the best info I have found on this family to date is at: "John Joseph GOODMAN was born about 1751 in VA. He died about 1825 in IN. John married Jane LOWRY on 26 Mar 1781 in St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, VA. |
