Martha Goodman ca 1770 in Bedford Co., VA – ca 1842 in Hart Co., KY

Martha Goodman married Matthias Reynolds in Bedford Co., VA Nov. 18, 1788 [Bedford Co, VA Marriage Bonds]. Matthias and Martha Goodman Reynolds may have been in Madison County, Kentucky by 1796. Matthias was on the Madison Co., KY 1800 Tax List

Matthias Reynolds was in Barren Co., KY by the time of the 1810 US Census, where he was a deacon of the Green River Baptist Church. In the 1810 census, he is 45 and over, wife Martha is 26-45, and children include one male 10-15 (probably Matthias, b ca 1798), 2 males under 10 (Phillip b 1803, Thomas b 1805), two females 16-25 (Dosha b. ca 1794, and probably Sarah Jane, sister of Martha and widow of Obediah Richardson, born ca 1778), one female 10-15 (Nancy, b before 1800), and three females under 10 (Martha, b 1803, and possibly two young daughters of Sarah Jane Goodman-Richardson). Of the females age 16-25, one may have been Martha’s younger sister Sarah Jane, by then widow of Obediah Richardson, two of the females under 10 ware probably Sarah’s daughters Katherine and Elizabeth.

Matthias and Martha also had daughters Judah, b. ca 1789, who had married Matthiew Harper on 31 Dec 1807, with permission of her father, Matthias Reynolds. Judah died 7 May 1815, after which Matthiew Harper married as his 3rd wife, Martha’s sister Sarah Jane Goodman-Richardson, and Matthias Reynolds was surety for this marriage.

In the 1820 Census, Matthias is in Munfordville, Hart Co., KY (Hart Co formed from Barren Co. in 1820). In this census, Matthias and Martha are age 45 and over. Their children include one male 16-18 (Phillip b ca 1803), one male 10-15 (Thomas b 1805), and two females 10-15 (Martha b 1805 and ??).

Matthias is listed in the 1830 Census in Hart Co., KY, but is incorrectly indexed as Mathew Reynolds. The original image script is clearly Mathias. He is 60-69, his wife Martha is 60-69, and another female is 80-89, probably either his mother or Martha’s mother. Also one male 20-29, one male 10-14, one female 30-39, one female 20-29, two females 5-9 and one female under 5. Because of the ages of the older couple, the children under age 15 are most likely children of the female aged 30-39 and/or the couple aged 20-29, who were probably the children of Mathias and Martha and the spouse of one.

In 1840, a younger Matthias Reynolds is in Hart Co., KY, age 30-40, with family, including one female age 70-80 (before 1770), probably his mother, Martha.

Martha is not mentioned as a daughter of John Goodman in the 1790 Greene County TN Court record with his other children because she was already married before that date. That she was a daughter of this John Goodman is established by the close proximity of Matthias Reynolds to the Amos I. Goodman family later in Barren County, KY census records, and that Matthias Reynolds was Surety for the marriage of Sarah Jane Goodman (widow of Obediah Richardson sister of Amos and Stephen Goodman of Barren Co., KY and presumed sister of Martha Goodman) to Mathew Harper in Barren County, KY on Dec. 19, 1815.
