Robert Goodman I of Hanover County, Virginia

ca 1703-1764

Son of Benjamin, brother of Benjamin and Samuel.

03-28-1729 Robert is mentioned in his father, Benjamin Goodman's will. "Hanover County VA Court Records 1733-1735 Deeds, Will and Inventories" abstracted by Rosalie Edith Davis. Also copy of actual will. He was given "The old plantation and 100 ac". This seems to indicate that Robert Goodman received father Benjamin Goodman's Hanover County plantation, which is further evidence that the Robert Goodman of Hanover County who later purchased lands on Lunenburg County was either this Robert Goodman, or more likely, a son of this Robert Goodman.

03-20-1739 Land Processioned. Brothers Benjamin & Samuel Goodman's lands also mentioned. Vestry Book St. Paul's Parish Hanover County Va 1706-1786 by C. G. Chamberlayne, Hanover County. Robert Goodman of Hanover County, mentioned in 1739 and 1763 processionings.

Robert Goodman's lands in St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, were processioned last in 1763, after which they were processioned naming Mary Goodman, presumed to be his widow. Since this Robert Goodman was still in Hanover in 1763, the Robert Goodman in Lunenburg County by 1758 is presumed to be a son of this Robert and Mary Goodman.However, we will probably never know for sure, since most Hanover County records were burned and lost.

He purchased land on Flat Rock Creek in Lunenburg County VA in 1759. He could not have been the same Robert Goodman whose lands continued to be processioned in his name through 1763 in Hanover County, so this must have been a son. Samuel and Benjamin Goodman, brothers of Robert Goodman I, both owned lands and resided in Louisa Co., VA at this time, so neither of them could have been the father of the Robert Goodman of Hanover who purchased land in Lunenburg in 1759.

Bartlett / Bartellot Bartholomew Goodman, b. ca 1732

Bartlett Bartholumew Goodman, b. ca 1730-35, was originally of Hanover / Louisa Co., VA, and served in French & Indian War with Anselm Clarkson, also of Louisa Co. Bartlett Goodman removed around 1783 or after, from Louisa Co., VA, to Campbell Co., VA. Bartellot Anderson and Bartellot Goodman are listed in a 3 Apr 1784 VA Gazette (Richmond) article, wherein Thomas Johnson, Sheriff, advertises for sale at Louisa Co. court house, land to satisfy the tax thereon (VA Genealogist, v30, p. 108). Bartlett Goodman owned lands in Campbell Co., VA ca 1787-1798, and is mentioned in some Bedford Co. VA marriage records as father of the bride. Beginning Dec 15 1798, he is referred to in Campbell County records as "Bartlett Goodman of Iredell Co., NC".

He is only presumed to be a son of Robert Goodman II at this time, because the sons of Benjamin and Samuel Goodman are well known and documented, and do not include Bartlett.
